Zaporojie Jewish Gymnasia "Alef"

The Jewish School Alef  was opened in Zaporojie in August 1992.  Today the gymnasium has 17 class-groups with total number of pupils about  350, from 1st up to 11th grade (aged 6 to 18 years).

The educational curriculum of the Jewish Gymnasium «Alef» includes all subjects of Ukrainian National Curriculum and the subjects of Jewish Studies. All students at the  Gymnasium are enrolled in a Jewish studies curriculum covering Hebrew, Yiddish, Jewish tradition, Jewish history and Israel,  Jewish Literature, Jewish folk songs and dances.  There are 37 experienced and qualified teachers.
The students of the gymnasium take an active part in the arrangements organised by the Community Centre «Mazal Tov» and  «Hesed Michael». At participation of Rabbi Nohum Erentroj in school the Jewish national holidays and memorials are held.

Jewish  Gymnasium «Alef» has close contacts with the city educational organizations. Its students participate in various city and national education Olimpiads.

In 2003 the Israeli Ministry of Education, the Jewish Agency for Israel and World ORT began to create a new ORT network in the CIS and Baltic States, resulting in several new schools entering the ORT family. The Jewish school Alef in Zaporojie is among these new members of the ORT network; however, the Alef school currently lacks the necessary technological and pedagogical resources to become a fully active member of the ORT system.

The ORT Centre in Jewish  Gymnasium «Alef» was opened in 2005 with the help of generous support of  the Pears Foundation, British ORT and its supporters. It consists of two Information and Communications Technology Laboratories, a Resource Laboratory, a Media Library and Network Centre. IT laboratory is intended for conducting lessons of informatics and IT. It is equipped with 15 multimedia personal computers and scanners. All computers are united in the local net, which provides connection to the Internet. The science and technology lab is intended for conducting lessons of technology. It is equipped with personal computers, graphic tablets and projector. Resource and video laboratories are intended for preparing printed and media materials that are necessary for lessons. It includes some multimedia computers, powerful copier, video devices, multimedia for classrooms, printers, scanner etc. Network center provides proper work of the local net and connection to the Internet. It is equipped with server and net equipment. Media library is situated in library. It is intended for pupils’ work with different sources of information. It is equipped with some multimedia computers, scanner and printer.

At the ORT laboratories, technology subjects are taught to children and adults. ORT serves as an information and technological resource provider for teachers in a wide range of subjects, including Jewish subjects.
